The title for the Mystery Book Club on Tuesday, February 22nd is VOICES by Arnaldur Indridason. The meeting will start at 7pm, with the doors opening at 6:30. The book is available for purchase at the store with a 10% discount. Questions for discussion are as follows:

1. Is the hotel that holds most of the action of this book a four-star hotel?  What are the signs of its standing?  Does the hotel somehow symbolize Iceland?
2. On the basis of this novel, how would you describe Indridason’s take on Icelandic society at the beginning of the 20th century?
3. Is Erlunder a sympathetic character?  Are there any truly sympathetic characters in this novel?
4. To what extent are the characters in this book dominated by personal loneliness?  Does the author suggest that this loneliness is social or endemic, or is it a result of the personal failings of the characters themselves?
5. Are there any signs that the author has a sense of humour?  Is he a realist or a romantic?
6. Is this Icelandic crime novel somehow different from other crime novels, either Scandinavian or not?
