David Hewson is my favourite British male writer - tied with Ian Rankin. The Lizard's Bite is the fourth book in the Nic Costa and Gianni Peroni series set in Italy.

Nic & Gianni are two detectives in Rome who have been banished. The duo caused a lot of feathers to be ruffled in their last case and their punishment was to be sent to Venice (I should be so lucky). Nic & Gianni are to go on holidays but they need to solve a simple case of a fire in a foundry where two bodies are found. The story takes many twists and gets more complicated as a British millionaire wants to close a real estate deal and things are not adding up. Nothing is ever easy in Italy, as Nic and Gianni find out. The first three books in the series: The Season for the Dead, The Villa of Mysteries, and Sacred Cut are available in paperback. I highly recommend that you read the series in order to maximize your reading pleasure and I know you will love the characters and come in and buy the hardcover.
